On the first day my roommates made discrete inquiries about whether I had already seen the Uni. And I know why!
Whereas I always thought that Bochum used to be part of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland and did not belong to the communist East, after having seen the university buildings I am not so sure anymore... It is all '60s Stalin-fashionable CONCRETE.
And now I have found out that there is actually an idea behind all these grey buildings! It is supposed to be a harbour, with the big blocks as ships (including fake chimneys!), the Auditorium as waves and the U-bahn station as well, and the other buildings as harbour buildings. Well, as you might now: I really like ships and harbours but this is very depressing..
As a matter of fact, Bochum used to have the highest suicide rate in Germany: people used to jump from the university buildings as they are quite high and were easily accessible for everybody. Even the architect killed himself after the opening of the Campus by the way.. Nowadays, you can no longer really open the windows. But there are some classrooms that do not even have windows! :S One of them is euphemistically called: Yellow Submarine. Sounds very nice and happy, but it is a very old classroom in a hospital-colour 'yellow' (for those of you who have ever been to Kottenpark: like the aula) without windows and with broken seats that give you a backpain just by the looks of it..
Luckily the classes are very interesting and the group is great! After the first week of Standards of Humanitarian Action, we started our first optional module in institution building this week. I am doing Protecting Refguees and Minorities. My first choice, so I am happy about it!
I am also starting to feel at home in my room. And it is nice to be so close to the university and the Uni Center (the mall). And great that so many NOHA-people are living on our little Europahaus/Haus der Nationen Plaza! Marthe (NL; we can wave at each other!-see picture), Reshmi (India) and Christine (Hawaii) are also living in Europahaus, and Emilia (UK), Elise (Belgium), Michi (Japan), Rory (Ireland) and Kathelijne (Belgium) are living in Haus der Nationen. Isabel (Spain) and Nicola (Italy) will probably move in this weekend. So always people to drink tea with!! Or other things.. :)
So I don't think I will be bored here! And otherwise I will just sneak back to the Netherlans for a weekend, as I will do this weekend (as Martijn's mother has her birthday)..

Wat een goede beschrijving van de universiteit. Hij komt helemaal overeen met de mensen uit Bochum, die nu in onze groep zitten :-). Maar fijn dat de groep in ieder geval leuk is! Succes met je keuzevak! -

Je 'gastenboek' deed het alweer niet.... Iig, de mensen hier in Uppsala die uit Bouchum komen zijn ook gillend weggerend van de universiteit in Bochum! Sterkte.. ;) Gelukkig is het programma daar wel erg leuk lijkt mij.

Ben weer thuis na een vac. in Spanje..allemaal wat minder avontuurlijk dan ik uit jouw verhalen lees maar in een heerlijk huis waar jij wellicht naar zult snakken!,. Zo te horen is er voor mij genoeg werk te doen! In Spanje is er ook werk..lijkt mij wel aantrekkelijk voor een paar mnd..zal eens kijken wat Cas er van vindt. Hanneke..don't jump!! gr. Jose
